NHS is recruiting an extra 260 Doctors to help A&E units

It has recently been announced by Jeremy Hunt MP, Health Secretary that the NHS is recruiting an extra 260 Doctors in an effort to bolster the demand of accident and emergency units in England, especially in the lead up to winter. There will also be an emphasis on recruiting senior Doctors were needed.

Research conducted by the College of Emergency medicine suggested that there are only about three quarters of the number of consultants needed in A&E units in England.

The Doctors will be recruited from overseas and will be offered short term contracts.

The problems associated with the overall performance of A&E departments are well publicised and the government hopes that increasing Doctor support will help ‘plug the gap’.

Mr Hunt said ‘We know some parts of the NHS are under pressure because of increased demand. That’s why we’re investing in a record number of A&E Doctors so patients continue getting treated quickly’.

The government understands and realises that there is a shortage of Doctors and resources with the A&E units across England. In October 2014 the government confirmed that an extra £150 million will be distributed to help hospitals with the winter demands on A&E, after earlier in September 2014 injecting an extra £250 million.

Been Let Down welcome these announcements

Here at Been Let Down we welcome these announcements, we often come across clients who have suffered significant delays in receiving treatment when entering A&E and the extra Doctors and cash injection should go some way to assist this problem. We hope that this will ensure that patients are being seen sooner when they arrive at A&E and Doctors will have more time to assess the needs and medical problems of the patients in A&E.

However given the recent crisis in Colchester hospital which is discussed in a separate blog, we at Been Let Down are watching with causation if the extra Doctors and cash can make a difference.
